What is the Konmari-Method?
The Kondo-ing has been talked about since a book called “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up” was published in 2011 in more than 30 countries. The book was translated into more than 5 languages and was published in the United States in 2014. No wonder many had become “Konverts” by that time and been multiplying all over the globe!
Now, maybe you are wondering about the person behind this cult-like trend of our generation.
Let’s get to know this author who became one of the Top 100 most influential people by Time magazine in 2015.
Digging deep with Marie Kondo…..
Her interest has always been in organising. At 5 she was already an organising freak, throwing out her dad’s suit and her mum’s purses without any permission, as she confessed.
In high school, she was just an average girl who was obsessed over looking for things to throw out. Until one day she realised that tidying is not about throwing things out, but about identifying things that would really make her happy.
Before turning 20 whilst she was still a Sociology student she founded a home-consultation/ organising business in Japan. This journey gave birth to her books. The business was in so much demand, that one of the wait listed clients asked her to write a book so that she didn’t have to wait too long for her services.
Why are there so many people obsessing with her method?
The word “KonMari” is simply derived from the name of the author, herself Marie Kondo.
Based on Marie, KonMari Method is a system and philosophy for tidying our home and leading a life that “sparks joy”.
Interesting.
Many have been drawn into this philosophy because of its effectiveness and huge impact on mindfulness, introspection, and optimism.
The Method
1. Decide and Visualize
Get deeper into your WHYs and intentions. It is invaluable to declutter if you do not do it out of obligation nor trend. Tidying is not about depriving yourself of the things you should let go but for you to be surrounded by things that bring joy.
2. Get Rid of the unnecessary
Letting go of stuff can be hard. Channel your thoughts and start setting a standard for the things that you should keep. Here are some questions that might help you when decluttering.
As for Kondo, one simple question changed the way she discards stuff. She always gets into her senses, asking if the item that she is holding sparks any joy. If not, she thanks it for its service and gives it away to the next master.
3. Sort Things Out
Categorise things not by storage, location nor colors, but by kind. Her method teaches us how to store all items of the same type in the same place.
Marie has her own way of folding clothes creatively – and it can perfectly maximise your wardrobe space!
4. Give everything a home
Kondo believes that tidying is a one-time event rather than an everyday task. To prevent things from being missing whenever you need it, make sure that every single item has its own home. Things should be treated like a person. Appreciated. Loved. Well taken care of.
The KonMari Method is so life changing that its principle can be applied to different areas of our lives.
“Tidying is just a tool, not the final destination.
The true goal should be to establish the lifestyle you want most once your house has been put in order”. -Marie Kondo

I absolutely fell in love with her method, especially the part of asking yourself do things around you “spark joy” such a great way to look at your stuff!

I read her book within the last year. I appreciate the method. I can’t say that I follow it fully, but I believe many can benefit from her approach to decluttering and organization!

I love her method. I own both of her books. I try and keep her words in mind when I’m shopping. If it doesn’t spark joy, it doesn’t get purchased.

Definitely a process that more of us should try when it comes to styling our lives, homes, and wardrobes! Love it 🙂
