6 Steps to Declutter your Kitchen
Does the thought of starting to declutter a kitchen fill you with dread?
Don’t worry, you are not alone!
Decluttering your kitchen can seem like a daunting task, but it’s a necessary step to creating a more organized and functional space. Not only will it make cooking and meal prep easier, but it can also save you time and money in the long run. Here are some tips for decluttering your kitchen and getting it organized.
6 STEPS to DECLUTTER your kitchen
STEP 1: REMOVE EVERYTHING AND SORT INTO PILES
First and foremost, take everything out of your cabinet and/or drawer and lay it out on your countertops. This will give you a better idea of what you have and what you don’t need. As you go through the items, sort them into three piles: keep, donate, and throw away. Be ruthless in your decision-making; if you haven’t used an item in the past year, it’s likely that you don’t need it – steps 2 and 3 will help with this.
(take advantage of the area being empty and give it a quick clean!)
STEP 2: GET RID OF DUPLICATE ITEMS
This is one of the easiest parts of the process as getting rid of duplicates can be an easier decision to make. If you have multiple similar items, you just need to be realistic on how many you ACTUALLY need. Keep your favourite/most used/most functional and eliminate the rest!
Doing this with your crockery can make a huge impact on your kitchen. How many plates and cups does your family need for everyday usage? Do you really need 25 dinner plates? Reducing the volume of key kitchen items will create so much more space in your cupboards.
If you are a household that entertains guests frequently you may want to have a separate area where you can keep the items at a more convenient spot that is not in your everyday area.
STEP 3: ELIMINATE ANYTHING YOU DO NOT USE REGULARLY OR LOVE
A lot of people get kitchen items as gifts. This can be difficult because you feel you need to keep those items out of guilt and obligation. But remember, when you accepted the gift, you then get to choose what to do with it. You are free to let go of gifts if you no longer use them or if they just weren’t what you need.
STEP 4: TACKLE THE BIGGER APPLIANCES
Next, take a look at the appliances and tools in your kitchen. Do you have duplicates of anything? Are there any appliances that you haven’t used in a while? Consider getting rid of any appliances that you don’t use regularly. This not only frees up space, but it can also save you energy and money.
STEP 5: CLEAR YOUR COUNTERTOPS
Nothing is more pleasant to see than a clear and clean countertop! Or is that just me??
Not only is it pleasing to the eyes and calming to the mind, you can also move freely whilst preparing a meal. Visual clutter is gone and you can use the counter whenever you need it.
So with all that space you have cleared in the previous steps, is there anything from your countertops that can go in the cupboards or drawers? Any items that you do not use frequently enough to justify the counter space?
STEP 6: RETURN THINGS WITH INTENTION
Once you’ve gone through everything, it’s time to start putting things back. Take advantage of storage solutions such as shelf risers, Lazy Susans, and stackable containers to maximize the space in your cabinets. Utilize the vertical space on your walls with wall-mounted shelves or hooks to hang pots and pans.
It’s also important to consider the layout of your kitchen. Are your most frequently used items easily accessible? Are the items that you use together, such as spices and cooking oils, located near each other? Rearrange your cabinets and drawers to make the most of your space and make it easy to find what you need.
Finally, make a habit of regularly decluttering your kitchen. Set aside time each month to go through your cabinets and drawers, and make sure that everything is in its proper place. Keep a donation bin in your kitchen, so you can easily get rid of items that you no longer need.
Decluttering your kitchen can be time-consuming, but the end result is well worth it. Not only will you have a more functional and organized space, but you’ll also save time and money in the long run. Remember, the key to maintaining a decluttered kitchen is to keep up with it on a regular basis, so that it doesn’t get out of control again.
