Navigating the Daunting Task of Decluttering When Feeling Overwhelmed
I want you to imagine standing right at the foot of a mountain, but this mountain is a bit unusual. It’s not made of rocks and earth but things—lots of them. It’s the clutter in your life, manifesting itself as a towering obstacle. It’s an intimidating sight, isn’t it?
You’re overwhelmed, and that’s perfectly okay.
But I promise you, once you conquer this mountain, once you have tidied up, the sense of relief and spaciousness you’ll experience is incomparable.
Starting might seem like the hardest part. But I’m here with you, offering my hand.
Let me share some lessons I’ve learned along my own decluttering journey. Here are seven steps that have been my beacon, my guide throughout.
Identify your ‘why’
Your ‘why’ is the purpose, cause, or belief that inspires you.
Why are you doing this?
Why does it matter?
Identifying your ‘why’ is important as it will be the guiding light when things get tough.
Are you decluttering for peace of mind, to create more space, or to have a safer environment for your family?
Whatever your reason, let it motivate you to keep going even when you find yourself emotionally attached to the things you need to let go of.
Plan your journey
Having a roadmap makes any journey less daunting, and it’s no different when it comes to decluttering. Start by identifying the most cluttered areas and decide where you want to start.
Remember, you don’t have to do it all in one day.
You could focus on one room at a time or even one drawer at a time. Having a plan breaks down the overwhelming task into smaller, manageable tasks.
Consistency is key
Developing a regular decluttering habit can be one of the most effective strategies. Instead of one monumental, exhausting clean-out, chip away at the clutter little by little every day or week.
This routine approach ensures that decluttering becomes a part of your life and not just a one-off event.
You’ll find that maintaining a clutter-free environment becomes much easier this way.
Make time for decluttering
It’s challenging to find time for extra tasks, but consider this: decluttering isn’t just an extra task, it’s an investment in your well-being.
It’s okay to put aside other commitments temporarily to make room for your decluttering mission.
Create a schedule and set aside specific time slots dedicated to decluttering. This way, it becomes a priority rather than something that is constantly put off.
Consider donating
If the thought of selling your items feels like an added chore, think about donating them instead. Not only does it save you time and effort, but it also offers a sense of fulfilment.
Knowing that your items are going to people who need them can make parting with your belongings a bit easier.
It’s like spreading a bit of kindness while decluttering.
Declutter before you organise
The goal is to minimise before you organise.
If you start by organising, you may end up just shifting the clutter around instead of actually reducing it. Begin by letting go of things you don’t need, and then move on to organising what’s left.
This process reduces the feeling of being overwhelmed and ensures a smoother journey to a clutter-free space.
Embrace the positives
Decluttering is a journey with many emotional ups and downs. But always remember the benefits that wait at the end.
With every item you part with, you’re making your living space more serene and manageable. You’re carving out more room for activities you love. You’re also creating a healthier environment for yourself and your family, physically and mentally.
Keep these positive outcomes in mind to motivate yourself throughout your decluttering journey.
Remember, it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. You’re not alone in this journey. You can seek help from a professional decluttering coach (such as me – you can see my services here) who can guide you through this process.
Alternatively, you can team up with a friend who shares your decluttering goal and support each other.
The journey of decluttering may seem daunting at first, but it’s a journey worth taking. Be patient and kind to yourself.
Celebrate your victories, however small they may be.
Embrace the joy and freedom that come with a clutter-free home.
Take that first step, and remember, we’re in this together.
